Friday, January 29, 1993 (Washington, D.C.) -- Following is Senator John McCain's statement in response to President Bill Clinton's decision to lift the prohibition on homosexuals in the military: "President Clinton's decision to move forward on his plan to overturn military regulations, contrary to the overwhelming opposition of the public and our military leaders, leaves the Senate no choice but to act as well. His action requires that we propose legislation to affirm the current military code of conduct." "Clearly President Clinton has reached a verdict on this issue without a trial. I urge him to gain the information needed to make such a far-reaching change before he takes irreversible action on this matter. If he does not act with the benefit of those public hearings, the debate will only be considered a facade for his prejudgement of this important national security issue." # # #
