Washington, D.C.U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) released the following statement today on the General Services Administration (GSA) agreeing to investigate whether the Grand Tunnel underneath the DeConcini Land Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona, is in jeopardy of collapsing. Last week, Senators McCain and Flake sent a letter to GSA Administrator Denise Turner Roth urging the agency to take immediate action to address the tunnel’s structural damages, which could endanger the lives of motorists and workers if left unrepaired:

“We appreciate GSA’s commitment to investigating the damages of the Grand Tunnel under DeConcini Land Port of Entry, which if left unrepaired, could have disastrous consequences for public safety and cross-border trade. With monsoon season on the horizon and torrential rains and floods threating to put the Grand Tunnel at further risk, it’s critical for GSA to take immediate steps to assess the tunnel’s structural integrity. We will continue to monitor GSA’s investigation closely and ensure it takes all the necessary action to prevent any potential breakdown.”
