STATEMENT BY SENATORS JOHN McCAIN & JEFF FLAKE ON U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICES OFFICIALLY LIFTING RESTRICTIONS ON RECREATIONAL BOATING NEAR LAKE HAVASU
Jan 27 2017
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) released the following statement today applauding U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) for officially lifting restrictions on recreational boating activities at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge near Lake Havasu in Mohave County, Arizona:
“We are grateful that USFWS has reversed its proposed boating ban in the Lake Havasu region and is opening a new dialogue with the local community. Motorized boating represents a significant part of the Lake Havasu economy and we encourage the new leadership team at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge to be mindful of that fact.”
In June 2016, USFWS notified Senator McCain that it had suspended its draft proposal to limit recreational boating activities at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge following the conclusion of a formal public comment period. The decision was made after months of protest by the local community, as well as legislative efforts by Senators McCain and Flake to block these harmful proposals for the regional economy.
