Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on the latest developments in Eastern Ukraine:
“The latest events in eastern Ukraine are deeply troubling and raise concerns about further Russian aggression. Pro-Russia demonstrators are engaging in coordinated acts of provocation and unrest. They have seized government buildings in the city of Donetsk and are calling for Russia to intervene militarily. These actions appear straight out of President Putin’s playbook.
“As the risk of further Russian aggression against Ukraine appears to be growing, it is outrageous that the Obama Administration still has not met the Ukrainian government’s request for modest military assistance. Ukraine’s leaders are seeking defensive weapons, protective equipment, spare parts, intelligence, and other supplies that could help their armed forces deter aggression and defend the country. By withholding military assistance, the Administration may think it is reducing the risk of further conflict. In fact, the opposite may be true: This decision will appear to Putin as yet another sign of weakness, which may only invite further aggression.”
